The 2026 season is going out with a bang! Around 60 cm has been measured over the last 48 hours, with up to 150 cm more to come over the next 3 days, according to some models. Well, by anyone's book, this means that we're in high danger for a while. It's just too much snow over a short time, and with strong SW, S and SE winds up high, natural avalanches are LIKELY and human-triggered avalanches are VERY LIKELY. Avalanches that start in the high alpine zone could travel all the way down to valley floors in the sub-alpine zone. So please play safe - you've made it this far - make sure you can enjoy summer too! Stay in safe, low-angle terrain and well away from avalanche paths until at least Tuesday next week. The weather won't be any good for backcountry missions anyway :)
A few new size 1 and 2 loose wet slides from steep rocky areas seen around the area at all elevations.
60cm of new snow has fallen over Wednesday and Thursday, with strong winds from the SW, S and SE. Storm and wind slabs are building fast. Cracking was observed on a NE aspect at 2500 m, and natural avalanches are probably already running. Before the storm, the high alpine snowpack was over 200cm, while at lower elevations it was quickly disappearing. Melt-freeze layers were found on sunny areas at all elevations, and all aspects below about 2700m. Many areas had a strong, consolidated snowpack with hard wind deposited layers. In some shallow, shady areas at high elevations, weak snow layers can be found and could be reactive to triggers.
Stormy weather continues over the weekend with significant amounts of snow expected until midday Monday. The snow briefly eases on Saturday and Sunday mornings, but comes back in again in the afternoon and evening. SW, S and SW winds will be strong at mid and high elevations. Freezing level around 2000 m on Saturday lowering to 1700m on Monday.
*In isolated places on N facing high alpine terrain, weak snow can be found at the ground. Although difficult to trigger, large deep slab avalanches might be possible. Cornice falls or snowmobiles might provide enough weight.
*Glide cracks and glide avalanches are active in many areas and can produce large avalanches at any time - it's best to avoid these areas if possible.
*Bad visibility will make navigation difficult.
