Snowy weather is expected for the next few days, with strong SW, S and SE winds. Loose wet, storm slab and wind slab avalanches are the main dangers, and the danger will increase as the new snow stacks up.
A few new size 1 and 2 loose wet slides from steep rocky areas seen around the area at all elevations.
Up to 20cm of new snow has fallen over Wednesday night, with much more to come. Winds were strong from the SW. Storm and wind slabs are building. In many areas in the high alpine the previous snowpack was over 200cm, while at lower elevations it was quickly disappearing. Melt-freeze layers were found on sunny areas at all elevations, and all aspects below about 2700m. Many areas have a strong, consolidated snowpack with hard wind deposited layers. In some shallow, shady areas at high elevations, weak snow layers can be found and could be reactive to triggers.
A period of stormy weather with up to 50cm of new snow by Friday p.m. with more coming over Saturday and Sunday. A brief clearance on Thursday afternoon. S, SW and SE winds are predicted. Freezing level 1600 - 1800m on Thursday and Friday.
*In isolated places on N facing high alpine terrain, weak snow can be found at the ground. Although difficult to trigger, large deep slab avalanches might be possible. Cornice falls or snowmobiles might provide enough weight.
*Glide cracks and glide avalanches are active in many areas and can produce large avalanches at any time - it's best to avoid these areas if possible.
*Bad visibility will make navigation difficult.
