Avalanche Georgia ("we", "us", "our") is committed to protecting your personal data. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and safeguard information when you apply for membership, report an avalanche observation, or use our services.
When you submit a membership application, we collect the following personal information:
We use your personal data for the following purposes:
When you report an avalanche observation, you can do so without an account. We collect what you enter in the form:
Photos are stripped of hidden metadata, such as the place and device they were taken with, before they are stored. Every report is reviewed by our forecasters before it is published. A published report shows the observation, its photos and your first name with the initial of your last name. Your training and contact details are never published: only our team can see them, and we use them solely to ask follow-up questions about your report. You can ask us at any time to anonymise a report you sent: we replace your name with a neutral label, such as “Anonymous observer”, and delete your training and contact details.
If you tick “Remember my details on this device” when reporting an observation, your name, training and contact details are saved in your browser’s local storage, so the form is filled in for you next time. This copy never leaves your device on its own: it is sent to us only as part of a report you choose to submit, it is not used for tracking or analytics, and it is not visible to us or anyone else. It is kept for 12 months after your last report, until you press “Forget me” on the form or submit a report with the box unticked, or until you clear your browser’s site data — whichever comes first. We recommend not using this option on shared devices.
Your data is stored securely using Supabase, a cloud database platform with encryption at rest and in transit. We take reasonable measures to protect your information from unauthorized access, alteration, or destruction.
With your permission, we use PostHog, a web analytics service hosted in the European Union, to understand how many people use our website and which pages they visit. This helps us improve the service and report its reach to our partners and supporters. If you tick “Allow anonymous usage statistics” (or press “Allow” in the notice), we store a random identifier in a cookie or your browser’s local storage and collect:
We do not collect your name, email or any information you enter in forms for analytics, we do not record your screen or keystrokes, we do not use analytics data for advertising, and we do not sell it. If you do not allow analytics, no analytics cookie or tracking identifier is created and your visit is counted only anonymously, without your location, using a one-way code that cannot be used to identify you. You can change your choice at any time using the “Analytics preferences” link in the footer. If you choose “No thanks”, we ask again every 6 months, unless your browser sends a Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control signal. Technical error reports from our server, and from the pages our team uses to manage the website, are sent without this permission so that we can fix problems; they are anonymous and contain no personal data. We keep analytics data only as long as needed for the purposes above.
Our website also stores a few small items in your browser that are needed for it to work and do not require consent: your chosen region and language, the fact that you have read the safety disclaimer, your analytics choice (and, if you declined, when), and sign-in information for organisation members and administrators. These are not used for tracking.
Access to your personal data is restricted to authorised organisation administrators who need it for membership management purposes. We do not sell your personal data and we do not share it for advertising. We use a small number of service providers to run our services, such as Supabase (data storage), Vercel (hosting) and PostHog (anonymous website analytics); they process data only on our behalf and under our instructions.
We retain your personal data for as long as your membership is active, plus a reasonable period after membership ends for administrative purposes. You may request deletion of your data at any time.
You have the right to:
