Spring conditions with rain below 2,500 m, and the potential for wind slab formation on south-facing slopes at higher elevations.
Thick cloud cover is expected to persist over the coming days, with air temperatures remaining above 0 °C even overnight. This will keep wet avalanches likely on steep slopes in the alpine and subalpine zones.
At the same time, moderate winds beginning on March 27 may form wind slabs on south-facing slopes in the high alpine.
Persistent fog and flat light will keep navigation difficult.
Size 2 natural slide down "Kobi light" slope:
3000 m., NW aspect
Size 3 avalanche down Bidara main peak slope - triggered by a cornice fall:
3100 m., N aspect
On March 22-23 significant amount of graupel was deposited across various elevations and aspects (at least 3-5 cm at 2000 m. with more higher up) where it was later covered by some 20-25 cm of fresh snow at higher elevations.
Below that sit 30 - 40 cm of new snow of March 15th and 16th storm that was shifted by strong N and NW winds. Deeper in the pack, hard old wind slabs and thin facet layers sit above a sugary base layer, found in isolated areas. The snow depth is often over 200 cm. (up to 250 cm at 3000 m.) In shallow areas, weaker snow can be seen in shady high elevation locations.
Thick cloud cover and fog throughout the forecast period.
Light precipitation (less than 1mm/h) during daytime.
Air temps up to 4C in the afternoon and above 0C during night hours at 2000 m. - freezing level will remain at 2300-2550 m.
Calm at resort level. Moderate (up to 35 km/h) N wind will start later in the day on March 27 in the high alpine and will continue through March 28.
Bad visibility (fog) during the forecast period.
Glide cracks and glide avalanches are likely and can produce large avalanches - don't stop underneath cracks, or just avoid these areas completely!
