Recent heavy (70 cm at 2000 m.) snowfall with subsequent strong N/NE and, later - SW winds led to a lot of natural and rider-triggered avalanche activity throughout the area on all elevations (see avalanche section for details). Layers of wind-drifted snow cross-loaded a lot of slopes and features, making route-finding in the upcoming weather that will be characterized by poor visibility especially difficult. Moreover, as big areas covered with surface hoar were reported and this new snow now can reside in top of auch weak layer. Amidst the spreading rumors about an avalanche fatality in the area we encourage you to play safe, carefully evaluate the conditions before venturing in the backcountry and spread the word about the Forecast so that more people will be aware of current conditions!
A skitourer-triggered size 1 avalanche was observed near the top of Lomisi ridge
Lots of size 1-2 natural slab avalanches along the Miketi-Sheli-Lomisa ridge
Size 2 slide on SE face of smaller Bidara (crown at around 2900 m.)
Size 2 avalanche on Sadzele S face right below the old Sadzele lift (crown at 3000 m.)
Numerous natural and rider-triggered slab size 1-2 avalanches in lower Kobi area.
N, NE, NW slopes between 2500 and 2200 m.
Size 1 slab avalanche on the far skier's right wall in Kobi valley resort zone (NW face, around 2700m )
Snowpack of around 150 cm can be found around the area.
Sugary, weak 10-20 cm thick base layer at ground still remains a main structural problem of the snowpack in the high alpine and alpine zones on W, N, and E slopes.
Big areas of surface hoar were reported in wind-shielded areas around the area at higher elevations before recent snowfall and wind cycle.
Recent snowfall brought 70 cm of fresh snow on top of these layers.
Heavy avalanche activity during the last 3 days confirms that these layers are active and are capable of producing life-threatening avalanches.
Air temps at resort level at around -2C during the day and as low as -7C during the night.
Low thick cloud cover on Feb 7th and 9th, overcast on Feb 8th.
Freezing level will stay at 1500-1800 m.
Some light precipitation on Feb 7th.
Light W and SW winds on Feb 7-8 and moderate to strong W wind on Feb 9th.
Flat light and low visibility due to low clouds.
Storm slabs after the recent snowfall might still be active as in some areas fresh snow now sits on top of surface hoar.
