Sunny days are here, and it's ski touring season! The main concerns over the next days are loose wet slides caused by intense sun and a high freezing level, with the possibility of areas of unstable snow that was built up by N winds overnight on Sunday. Have fun out there but take care. Any observations about snowpack and avalanches are really appreciated - post on our Facebook group or send us a message.
A few natural loose wet slides seen on Lomisa - Miketi area, up to size 2
A couple more size 1 - 2 loose wet spotted on Lomisia - Meqeti ridge area.
80 - 100cm of new snow fell between April 9th - 12th with strong winds from the SW, S and SE, switching to N and NE. Storm and wind slabs are now isolated. Pre-storm, the high alpine snowpack was over 200cm, while at lower elevations it was quickly disappearing. Melt-freeze layers were found on sunny areas at all elevations, and all aspects below about 2700m. Many areas had a strong, consolidated snowpack with hard wind deposited layers, with some layers of graupel noted. In some shallow, shady areas at high elevations, weak snow layers can be found and could be reactive to triggers.
Sunny weather until Friday, with some cloud at times. Light to moderate S winds. Freezing level around 2000 m, rising to 2200 on Friday.
*In isolated places on N facing high alpine terrain, weak snow can be found at the ground. Although difficult to trigger, large deep slab avalanches might be possible. Cornice falls or snowmobiles might provide enough weight.
*Glide cracks and glide avalanches are active in many areas and can produce large avalanches at any time - it's best to avoid these areas if possible.
